Illustrative UK business case studies

What practical improvement can look like—in numbers.

These are realistic UK business scenarios, not claims about named or past clients. Each model states its assumptions, calculation and limits so you can judge the commercial logic for yourself.

Dorset hospitality business312 hoursof staff capacity identified each year

Removing duplicated weekly administration

A 14-person independent hospitality business has rota changes, supplier updates and stock information recorded in several places. A time review identifies six paid staff hours each week spent repeating information or resolving avoidable gaps.

Practical response

Map ownership, create one weekly control sheet, set a single handover point and remove duplicated updates. The goal is to redirect capacity to customer service and revenue-producing work—not simply cut staffing.

6 hours × 52 weeks = 312 hours. At the April 2026 National Living Wage of £12.71, that time represents £3,965.52 in gross wages before employer on-costs.

What the figure means: capacity identified, not a guaranteed cash saving. A real review would use actual pay rates, time records and operational constraints.

Public input: GOV.UK National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates. All other figures are stated scenario assumptions.

Tightening invoice and debtor control

A UK professional-services company has £360,000 of annual credit sales and takes an average of 58 days to collect payment. The review introduces clear payment terms, immediate invoicing, scheduled reminders, escalation ownership and a weekly debtor view.

Illustrative outcome

If average collection falls from 58 to 38 days, 20 days of sales move forward. The same model assumes annual chasing time falls from 86 to 26 hours, releasing another 60 hours of owner or staff capacity.

£360,000 annual credit sales ÷ 365 days × 20 days = £19,726.03 of working capital brought forward.

What the figure means: earlier cash availability, not extra revenue or profit. Tax, bad debt, seasonality and invoice disputes would need separate analysis.

Context: Small Business Commissioner research reports an average 86 hours of chasing for surveyed businesses affected by late payment. UK Government analysis estimates late payment costs the economy almost £11 billion annually. Turnover and debtor-day figures are stated scenario assumptions.

Midlands removals company85.5 hoursof internal administration potentially released

Creating a managed file for EU household moves

A UK removals company handles 72 household moves each year to France, Spain and the Netherlands. Its operations team spends 1.25 hours per move on document collection, while 13 incomplete files each require a further 1.5 hours of rework.

Managed-document model

Client instructions, destination checklists, document chasing, inventory validation and file naming move to one managed process. The removals team retains 15 minutes per case for operational oversight, while the model allows four files needing 1.5 hours of internal escalation.

Before: (72 × 1.25) + (13 × 1.5) = 109.5 hours. After: (72 × 0.25) + (4 × 1.5) = 24 hours. Potential capacity released: 85.5 hours.

What the figure means: a capacity model based on stated assumptions. It is not a promise of customs clearance, duty relief or financial saving. The appointed customs broker or EU agent remains responsible for formal advice, declarations and clearance.

All volumes, time inputs and rework rates are transparent scenario assumptions intended for replacement with the removal company’s own operating data.

How to read these

Useful models, not manufactured success stories.

The scenarios show how I frame a commercial question: establish a baseline, make assumptions visible, distinguish cash from profit and test the result against the real business.

  • No business or client is presented as real
  • No result is guaranteed
  • Public figures are linked at source
  • Calculations can be replaced with your own data
  • Risks and professional boundaries stay visible

What would your numbers show?

A focused review can replace assumptions with your actual costs, time, contracts and priorities.
